'96 tailight question

I am new to this forum, this is my first post. I need some help from you guys in the know. I want to put clear tails on my 96 xlt. I see that 95-97 tails are hard to find, but I found some on ebay for $135. The 98-01 tails are $43. What is the difference? They look the same to me as far as shape. Is it perhaps they would bolt on fine but the light sockets/configuration is different? Help me out guys!

They won't line up with the hatch.

You know, the thought crossed my mind. Or even modifying my hatch to fit and repainting it. (I can do paint and body). But that is just the wrong way to reach my goal I guess.

what color is your X? There are other mods too to hook up the tails...I painted mine all red. Will put some tint on soon too others just tint them. Just thought I would throw the idea out there. Here are mine:
