96 XLT Cruise Control *edited*

Hi guys, newbie here. :australia
I just bought a 96 and its got a few things wrong with it.
One is the cruise control doesn't work. The On and Off switches on the steering wheel don't light up.

I've ordered a shop manual but it will take 5 or so weeks to get here.
Can anyone help?

Editted to correct: It's the Resume, Set Accel and Coast buttons that don't light up.
Is that a fuse? If so, which one?

this has nothing to do with you problem, but were did you order the owners manual from? I bought a used 94 XLT and it din't come with a owner's manual sorry I wish I could help :)

That's a shop manual I have ordered, not an owner's handbook.
I'd like a handbook too.

sounds like the bulbs are bad in your steering wheel (i dont know if the newer explorers use bulbs or leds) so youre prob gonna have to replace them. but first, check and make sure all your fuses are intact. also, check the vacuum hose under the hood and be sure it is connected. i have a 92 and when i got mine last year, some joker had just plugged the cruise control tube off for some reason.

I have a 96 xlt and my lights on the same side come on and off on their own.Nearest I can Tell it's caused by the wiring in the steering column. :fire:

I have a 96 Sport and the Cruise Control buttons on the left side of the steering wheel are out, but the ones on the right side work. I'm fairly certain it's the bulbs, but I am hesitant to pull the cover off with the air bag there. The plug that connects the turn signald (and everything else in the steering wheel that's electrical I guess) is a weak link. Last time I took it to a dealership the mechanic raised my wheel ( I keep mine pretty low) and pulled the plug!! I realised something was wrong when I put my turn signal on leaving the dealership and nothing happened! They took it right back and plugged it back together, but it was an eye opener.
