- 2006 Explorer Limted V8
Just got back from Philly!
Unfortunatley the tow dolly didn't pan out. Seems the straps they gave me would only work with at least 14 wheels. So when I loaded my Yugo with it's 13" 70 155s onto the tow dolly and started racheting the straps down I had 2more inches to go. DAMN! No time to run to Northern Tools to see if I could find some smaller wheel straps so I took the dolly back and got my money back.
Just as well because we went sightseeing through Lancaster on the way up so not having to deal with another car was a blessing.
So how did the 5.0 liter AWD Explorer do? I averaged 18 to 19 mpg! Traveling mostly at 65 mph with the cruise control on and A/C on all the time. Virginia is 65 mph the whole way up I-81 and littered with state troopers so watch out!
I keep hearing a clunk at take off and hard braking but I think it's my trailer reciever moving back and fourth which I will check later. Never heard this before putting the reciever on the hitch.
I did hear a pop at one time while making a sharp left turn while going over a bump. I was sort of making an illegal U turn on a two lane road. Any idea what that maybe?
I checked the oil after 400 miles going up and it appears the engine is not using an oil at all at 83,000 miles which is amazing since I have other cars that have fewer miles that use more oil like my Subaru (50,000 miles).
Anyway I was pleased at the mileage I got and how well the Explorer did. Even survived the PA turnpike and the rough streets of downtown Philly.
One thing though. The fuel guage is just like my like 68 Fairlane. It's NOT spot on. I stopped by my folks house to eat and started the engine and noticed the fuel guage was reading empty and the check guages light was on. I looked at my tripometer and noticed I had put 300 miles on this tank.
So I grabbed one of my lawnmower tanks and put maybe 4-5 gallons in it. Now the gauge is at half a tank. This is a 21 gallon tank.
So when the tank reads empty I still have about 4 to 5 gallons of fuel in the tank. After doing the math at 18 mpg that sounds about right.
