Lastnight, while driving to a jeweler to look at wedding rings with my fiancee, I hear this loud pop/snap (sounded kinda like a chain) at 70mph. The Explorer, 1996 XLT 4x4 4.0 OHV auto (4r55e) 195k+ miles, stays running, but the RPMs climb like it is in netural. I pull off the side of the road and run through the gears. Every gear acts as though it is in neutral. Park still works and keeps the Explorer from moving. I cannot hear or feel any engagement as I got through R-D-1-2. This happened in 2WD drive mode and switching to any 4x4 mode did nothing (4x4 Auto and 4x4 Low). The tranny fluid was changed about 6-7k miles ago.
I've never had problems with it shifting and it has always shifted smooth without any clunks. There has always been a bit of driveline vibration (especially on deceleration) at 60+ mph. U-Joints was on the list until the fuel pump died last week. The transmission fluid level was fine a week ago. I've been driving it a bit lately to make sure my fuel pump replacement is solid before any long trips.
Honestly, when it comes to automatics I am completely stupid. I got into working into cars three years ago, but this is my first automatic since then. I would appreciate any help or advice.
Thank you,
-Brett
