96' Ford Explorer XLT
Hey guys,
I Just recently bought an Explorer that my dad was selling because of a tranny problem. I definatly got an awesome deal on it, and I could replace the tranny for less than What i could buy one for (i got a real good deal on it). But anyways, It is a 96' 4.0 XLT. Always been taken good care of. 110,000 miles on it. This only happens when putting the shifter into drive (auto.). It does not happen in reverse. Im not sure about 1,2, or 3rd I wil check on that. But, When i put it into drive, the Tranny doesnt go right into drive, It will just sit there. Sometime i have to wait 5-10 sec. before it goes. It drive absoulty fine after it is in gear. I have seen a Shift Kit that I can buy that is supposed to fix this. Just can anyone tell me what might be wrong? Oil has always been kept at a good level. Explorer has defiantly been babied!
Thanks alot

Filter!

The trnny filter is really easy. Go to the parts shop and get you a pan gasket and filter. If I remeber correctly it takes 5qts of tranny fliud. loosen the front or the back and remove the other side. This will let it rain then take the others out remove pan. The filter is right there. There is one bolt holding it there. Remove it replace the filter clean the pan. I used some gasket maker to hold the gasket in place and snug the bolts. Fill and run the truck in gear with the brake on to get all the air ( if any ) out of the system. Really easy get you a book and that tells you everything.

trans sliping

Sounds like your tranny is worn a little. If you to put a filter and change the fluid, whatever you do, do not flush the tranny with any cleaner! That will spell doom. Whats happening is the tolerences in your tranny are wide from use. Now its taken the pump a while to build up enough pressure to move the vehicle. Theres a product called TransX come in a pretty blue and silver oil can, I've had very goodluck with it on slipping trannys. Its a conditioner not a cleaner. I would also take your pan to a local exhaust shop and have them weld a drain bolt, so you can change the fluid without having to drop the pan. Also if the fluid is black or very dark, sounds like it may of over heated. The fluid should look a little darker than what comes out of the bottle.

jenkins...
I will go and get the parts tommorow. Is there anything i should look for inside of the tranny. Like any signs? i could tell yall of anything? ha.. im not sure if that makes any sense but, yea...
thanks

drnaline...
thanks man, I will look for that TransX stuff tommorow? Local Autozone or Napa ought to have it, correct?

Ill post back the color and smell of the fluid..
thanks,
Kendal

Watch your torque specs on that filter. Fords are bad about not shifting right if you overtighten them,

torque

hey man,

Do you know What i should Torque the filter too?
thanks
Kendal

I believe it is 8-10 inch pounds. Key word there inch pounds not foot pounds.

tranny stuff

I just tighten the filter as hard as i can by hand. Make sure you oil the sealing ring and that the one on the old filter stays on the old filter.
Yeah, you should be able to find it a autozone, thats where i ussually get it.
What you will find in the pan is like a grayish silver muck. Its dust from the friction disks and is normal. if there is anything in there bigger than a grain of sand, not neccessarly as thick but that general size your probably chewing disks but you may be able to limp it for a while.

thanks

thanks to everyone that replied...i have bought everything and i will mess with the tranny this weekend...ill post if things get any better..
To anyone that wants to:
what are the best mods that you have done to your explorer? Performance and handling wise?
thanks

You may want to postpone the performance mods until you get the transmission squared away. Nothing going to kill a weak transmission like more power....
