My mom-in-law's 97 explorer (6 cyl. 4.0) is throwing 2 codes. 0401 and 0402. The weird thing is that one is insufficient EGR flow and one is excessive egr flow. Does sound like a bad EGR or something else?

The truck seems to be running fine. Is a bad EGR (if that is what it is) gonna leave her stranded at some point?

Thanks for any thoughts,
John

Having the same issue here John; light just came on yesterday. Did a little troubleshooting on this today (as much as I could figure out from the Haynes manual) with no luck. Keep me posted if you find anything out.

I'll have the car this weekend and will check for any clogs in vacuum hoses, dpfe and egr. If I find anything I'll post back.

Hey John,
I ment to reply the other day; after reading some other forums and post across the web, I decided to just go ahead and swap out the dpfe pressure sensor, got on at the dealership for 120 didn't want to have to swap it out again after 2 years like I would have if I had gotten it at auto zone, took 5 mins to do cleared the computer memory, fuse 11 in the fuse box in the engine compartment (big 20amp fuse) and it works like a charm.

Hey John,
Hasn't come back on yet. Seems to be working like it's supposed to.

re cel

:)
What were your symptoms?? I've just have a cel for what seems like no reason , cleaned the MAF and disconnected the battery and replaced. Cleared the cel for about 20 miles then came back on! I went home cleared the code and clean the K&N filter now its fine I hope!

Just the CEL and the codes were the only symptoms that I had. Replaced the DPFE Sensor and haven't had problems since.

same here. cel and codes, no performance problems. i replaced the dpfe and so far so good. i just drove from fla to n.c. and no cel. fingers crossed.
