I just found the water leak on my son's 97 4.0 SOHC. It took awhile to find as the engine had to be hot and revved up to see it. It is a pinhole leak on a hose that comes out the bottom of the themostat housing and down to the top of the water pump. It is only about 3 inches long and looks like it is preformed. Anybody have the part number and what is involved in replacing this hose? I can see at least the tensioner needs to come out. I hope I don't have to remove the thermostat housing.

I have found out that the hose is the bypass hose, also called the "Hose from Hell". From what I have read, either the thermostat housing or the water pump have to be remove to replace it. Is this correct? I have been putting off changing my upper and lower intake gaskets, but it looks like now may be the time. I have read that under the thermostat housing is and o-ring that you can not buy by itself. Is this correct. I would hate to change all that and create a leak under the thermostat housing. Any advice would be appreciated. Looks like my weekend is already planned for me.

That hose is no picnic, sorry to say!! Mine blew sky high in the middle of January. I had to do my t-stat housing at the same time. What I did was loosen the upper intake manifold(I need to change the gaskets too!!), and removed the t-stat housing....Reassembly involved putting the hose on the water pump, and then maneuvering the t-stat housing back down.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM.

when i replaced my lower thermostat housing (2yrsAgo) i did replace that lower gasket as well....DO I REALLY HAVE TO REPLACE THAT GASTKET AGAIN IF I REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT FOR A MOMENT?
Cause i too now have a tiny jet of coolant coming from that short Bypass hose and i'll have to lift up on that thermostat housing to get it out/in.

Do i/ Should i replace that lower t-stat gasket AGAIN just for this hose removal??
And is it that hard to remove/loosen that upper intake manifold right above the thermostat housing? gaskets involved with removing that?

any answers would be great...i gotta start gettin' to it in the morn on this thing (hose).
