I was wondering if the 97 5.0 V8s had an air tube for the converters. I will be putting a dual exhaust on with high flow cats and I need to know which ones to be. Air tube, or no Air tube.

Thanks for the help,

Ev

The cats on explorers are actually pretty high flow already considering they are factory cats. I'm not sure if you see much if any improvement with replacing yours cats. Thats a lot of money for new cats that could be spent elsewhere and get more power.

Explorers/Mounty's come with high flow cats, among the best out of any production vehicle. You wouldn't see any gains because of that.
If your cats were clogged up or faulty then you could replace them but you really won't see any difference as cats barely add any power, just a smoother flow of gasses to exit.

I didn't really ask your opinions on whether or not i should change the cats or not. I just want to know if i need cats with an air tube or not. And for the record i do think high flow cats are much better as they help out a great deal on my 2001 cobra.

Thanks,

Ev

97 Cats

I am also interested in the type of cats that I have to get for my 97 5.0 X. I am interested in everyone opinions about type sof exhaust systems, type sof cats, headers and anything else. But we need to know if the cats have an airtube or not, so we can know what type to buy.

Also, what do yuo guys think about headers? Ford motorsport headers worth getting?

Thanks,
Joe

sorry mis-read your post, I'm not sure about the air tube.

Not sure about them helping out a great deal because my friends 03' Cobra only gained about 4rwhp hp and a little torque on the dyno after having high-flow cats installed. Same thing with another friends 01' Cobra, no noticeable gains at all with his new cats. They went all out on mods and just figured they might as well get new cats even if they don't add anything. And a few more people i know with GT's (5.0 and 4.6 sohc) and they received no noticeable gains at all on the dyno or track or regular driveing, all cats really do is add a faster and smoother flow to the exhaust, they don't really do anything for power and dynoes prove that. But if your going out for all mods I guess you might as well replace them.....or if your cats are clogged......

Their basically the only headers available for 5.0 Explorers, but their pretty good for the price, there's a lot of guys on hear running them and like them.

Maybe the high flow cats your friends have aren't doing any good if they are just welded in place of the stock ones. I could see that as not creating any performance benefit. But when done properly, a new X or H pipe on a mustang with high flow cats will yeild a substantial performance gain. I myself have longtube headers on my mustang and a high flow catted x-pipe. Considering this and a catback exhaust are my only mods i am pretty sure there is no mustang with stock cats dynoing anywhere close to what i got. BTW Hope your friends can get better numbers with their cars.

whoops, actually my bad, I think I made that a little confusing. Sorry I was up all night. I think I made it sound like they just had cats added on:confused: . What I meant was like on my friends 03's Cobra he has long tubes along with a magnaflow catback and he used to have an off-road x-pipe (VRS I think?) that obviously had no cats, but he switched to a Magnaflow catted x-pipe and it sounds a lot better now. What I meant was the off-road x-pipe only added somewhere around 2-3 extra rwhp over the catted Magnaflows. The same goes for the other mustang guys I know, I was talking about the difference between catted and non-catted, my bad, didn't even really appy to this thread:confused:

But yeh, x-pipe or h-pipe and a catback definitley makes a difference on a Mustang. My friends 03' gained a
sh!tload of power by swapping the Lightning pulley, and the Magnaflow catback and x-pipe, now he has long tubes and some other stuff and it extremely fast and sounds incredible.

Sorry for the confusion, ****, I have to haul to class now, forgot what time it was:confused:
