My 1997 XLT with the 5r55e transmission started to display intermitten delay/slipping when shifting into 3rd gear under light to moderate accelleration when transmission was warm. Also noticed slight delay to reverse gear. Symptoms do not always show up and seems to also depend on how aggressive I am driving. Have flushed transmission fluid every 20-30,000 miles since purchased and have been using synthetic mercon v. Recently changed filter and flushed fluid again. Have re-torqued bolts on valve body to 10 ft. lbs. No real change in behavior. Vehicle has 81,000 miles.

Also notice slight clunk from transfer case area when slowing to a stop and transmission gears down to 1st gear.

Any suggestions?

The clunk may be your slip yoke - just needs to be lubed.

There have been threads about the tranny shifting - can't remember titles, but had to do with the 3rd gear shift. Try searching for missing or slipping shifts with 5r55e...

the slipping in 3rd and delay in R could both be related to a slipping direct/reverse clutch. Could also be (and easier to fix) the intermediate servo is leaking and you are not getting solid band apply.. (though this would be unrelated to the delay in reverse) whereas the first would explain both. Finally low line pressures could also explain this.

suggestions

Do you suggest having a transmission shop investigate or the dealer. My experience with the dealer is that they primarily focus on r&r rather than diagnose and repair.
