Hello all,

Just found the site. I will try not to make this too long winded. My '97 had a rebuilt T-case installed about six months ago.
Recently, the 4WD light comes on and flashes non-stop, and the front end is making a nice "grrrrr" sound when taking corners. The switch is left in "auto". It seems as though the 4WD is not engaging/disengaging properly. I want to corner the problem before the T-case grenades again.
The '97 is my second Explorer, it has 133K on it. The first was a '91 that I sold with 203K on the clock.

Thanks,

Scott

First thing i would do is put a switch in. There is a brown wire underneath the seat that goes into the bundle of wires that runs along the doorstep just under the carpet. Snip the wire and you will only engage the rear wheels. Put a 30 amp switch in to turn the front on or off. This will help to isolate the problem, and give you drivability for the time being. Bring it in and tell them they did a poor job. They should fix it. If not, you DO have legal recourse as they said they rebuilt it, they have to do so because the contract is with an understanding that it will work. Contact your lawyer if you need to.

The first thing to do is get the codes read for the flashing 4x4 lights.Yes the "brown wire mod " is a great feature to have but is not going to solve your problem. It sounds like you have a bad speed sensor on the t-case and in some cases a simple fluid change will do the trick. If you are tired of the control trac t-case a manual shift 1354 will bolt right up.

Thanks for the heads up! I will have the codes read, and go forward from there. How tough is the speed sensor to change?

Thanks again,

Scott

I am new to this site too. and posted my first thread a few days ago about the same problem you have with the Heathen Devil 4wd lights flashing and not coming out of 4wd. These guys on this site really know their stuff. I drained the transfer case and added new fluid to no avail. I did the brown wire thing and installed a 30 amp switch. And yes it does work, allthough I know I still need to correctly fix the real problem. I just hope it gets me thru the upcoming Spring turkey season... it gets a little slick in the spring climbing these WV and VA hills.
