I searched but got scared off by all the results...sorry. I have a 97 explorer and when I step on the gas firmly from a stop or rolling there is a big clunk. I had thought it was the cv shaft, which technicaly was bad, but after replacing it the clunk is still there. While on the lift I used a pry bar and tried to check the control arm bushings but it was tough. Any suggestions.

I had the same problem and it was the driveshaft u-joints.

I had the same noise on my 99 explorer 161,000 miles. I spent a lot of time and money tracking it. I would start with changing the transfer case oil. The clutches could be the problem. After drive shafts, spider gears, axles, changing the transfer case fluid fixed the problem. I heard the noise decrease with the fluid change. By four weeks the noise was completing gone. I used Amsoil oil.
