I have a 2000 Explorer XLT V8 AWD. I have been hearing a thump or a clunk in the front end, I think the passenger side. I heard this sound last winter, and very rarely heard it over the summer. It has gotten cold again and I hear that nasty noise again. I have recently replaced both hub assemblies since the passenger side was starting to squeal, replaced lower ball joints, uppers are still fine, and it still is making the clunk noise. It is too far forward for it to be the torsion bar insulators, everything seems tight in the front end, but just cant pinpoint the cause.

Any ideas?

I have the same setup as you and also have the clunk. I spent the money and replaced the lower ball joints. I had my wife to bounce the front end while I looked for the culprit. Turned out to be the stabilizer link where it goes through the lower control arm. Mine also is doing it again. It will drive you crazy!

That was it

Thanks for the help Lanky. I just replaced both end links and the front end doesn't make a sound.
