97 Explorer HVAC controls

97 Explorer, reg 4.0 motor. No matter where you put the hot or cold selector it still blows semi warm. Is this control cable operated or vacuum operated. What do I need to check.

It sounds like your blend door has broken. If so, it is inside the heater plenum which requires the entire dash to come out to replace it. Figure on about $150 part and $600-$1000 in labor. That is worst case, however it is also very comon on '95-early '98 Explorers. Beginnning in the '98 model year, Ford started using nylon blend doors instead of the ABS plastic doors that were so prone to cracking. Best case would be if something just came loose that can be reattached. That is less common though. Good Luck.
