97 explorer ohv turbine speed sensor issues

Hello all, I've read all the posts I can find about this sensor. It's outside the trans, it's inside the trans ..... if in fact it is inside the trans, can it be changed without a removal? I'm wondering if you can drop the valve body and reach it? Several people said that they switched the sensor on top of the trans and it fixed the weird shifting that I have now. I believe that's just a speed sensor but I can't seem to find any good info on these things. Any knowlege or links would be appreciated. Thanks, Andy

I believe it is on the center support. I don't think you can get to it without a full tear-down.
