97 explorer problems ,no o/d

i bought a 97 explorer thats having some tranny problems. it wont shift into o/d. it has the flashing o/d light an is running in limp mode, it wont shift pass 60km. i cant get a code out of it cause my scanner wont reteve tranny codes an im unable to take it into a shop to get it scanned.
i was searching car-part.com for a used tranny an i was being asked if it has or hasnt a overdrive drum sensor. how do i know if the truck has a o/d sensor or not?
if i do have this o/d sensor is it possable thats what i need to replace?

The code will tell you what's wrong before you replace parts that aren't bad. Check # 7 in my list of useful threads for information on the sensors.

ok is there a brand name code reader i can buy that will do the tranny codes? or is there another way to get the codes to come up? an iv tryed snap on readers before an nothing happens.
