Hey everybody, new guy here, hoping that someone can help me with a problem that just arose 2 days ago.

I have a 97 Explorer Sport 6cyl 4.0 SOHC with 140,000 miles on it. I've pretty much babied the car since I got it 2 years ago and the only major replacement I've had to make is the alternator. Everything has run beautifully on this car.

The other day i was parked at a convience store and had the car running when I noticed a slight tick (1 tick, sounded like a hammer lightly hitting metal, very lightly) coming from under the hood. I only heard it once and figured it was no big deal. I couldn't hear it while driving the car as it wasn't that loud in the first place. Since then I'd say its been happening every minute or 2 when the car is first turned on and will continue until about 10 minutes after it's turned off. I don't hear it ALL the time when the car is on because like I said it's just not too loud. I didn't think it was engine knock because it does it when the car is off for about 10 minutes (you'll hear it maybe 3 or 4 times in that time-span)

My father, a mechanic who lives far, over the phone said that it might just be the oil lifter getting slightly stuck. He suggested I put Supreme gas in there and let it run its course in case there's a carbon buildup affecting the air flow. But he sounded pretty sold on the oil lifter.

Anyone ever had this problem or know exactly what it is? Like I said, the car runs completely fine, no smoke, vibration, noise (other than the momentary tap), it doesn't lag, no acceleration problems, nada.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

By the way, this is a cool board :bigthump

seach for 0012m. It could be you're timing chain tensioner and cassettes. Theres a lot of info on here about them.
