My 97 Explorer has been driving great up to today, with 115,000 miles on it. I was driving down the road and LIGHTLY applied the brakes and heard a light clunk sound from the front of the vehicle along with a rubbing sound. The vehicle then stopped making the noise when braking and i assumed everything was fine. Now I am trying to back up the truck and it will not reverse. If I shift into reverse the transmission engages and the vehicle moves backwards about 1-2 feet and then stops. It does not shut off or make any grinding noise but just stops like a wheel is stuck. If you apply throttle to about 2000 rpm the vehicle will lurch backwards about half a wheel rotation and then stop again. If shifted into drive it works perfectly and you wouldn't notice anything is wrong with the truck. Shortly before this the vehicle started to make a clunk noise when backing up or driving forward when the wheel was cut all the way to one side. I was thinking it might be a transfer case but i haven't had anything professionally diagnosed yet but wanted to get an idea of what it could be.

Thanks,

Forrest

Is it the original transmission?
