97 Explorer with a rear timing chain problem.

Hello I have just bought a 97 explorer, and the rear timing chain broke. Anyway I am going to replace the engine with a used one. Is there any way to know if the timing chain is bad in the used engine. It seems to me that a lot of people are having the same problem with there explorers. Is it just a bad year?
