The speaker in the subwoofer has failed and I would like to replace it. I need to find out the specs on this system to make a selection. Or if anyone has done this let me know what you used and how it is working. Thanks

In my "Budget Bass" project, I mowed out the OEM 6" hole to accept an 8" Goldwood GW-8PC-30-4. It was on sale at Parts Express for $23.72. Unfortunately, the stock JBL grill does not have enough clearance, so I am still working on modifying it. It is powered by an Alpine MRP-T220. The OEM enclosure was from a junkyard.

I have not heard the OEM JBL subwoofer, so I have no idea how this compares.

New threads for this come up quite a bit, there really needs to be a sticky for subwoofer replacement or something.

You can fit a 6.5" sub in the stock JBL box, or modify it to fit an 8" like toypaseo's. Any decent sub that is single voice coil, 4 ohm, with 100W RMS power handling should work fine with the stock amp.

Replacement for OEM subwoofer

I replaced my subwoofer with the JL Audio 6W0-4.

It was a perfect drop in replacement and sounds great. About $80 from my local car audio place and they even had one in stock! Everything is back together and works great. :)

NOTE: I did have to lenghthen the wire b/c of the way the JL Audio connectors are, but this wasn't a big problem. Just splice some longer wire from the existing plug.

I like that you can order the elemental designs online. Is it a drop-in replacement too? What makes it better? They seem about the same price.

The Elemental Designs sub looks a little too deep for the factory enclosure, though.

My bud has the ED and he told me he had to massage the enclosure a little bit. I know the JL was also too deep (they have the same mounting depth). I bought a JL and spent a few minutes with a dremel to cut back the plastic support in the enclosure that supports the backside of the speaker (the magnet). The support is not needed as the speaker frame is very sturdy. I didn't have to cut much and it fit fine and sounds nice. But the ED has lower impedance - he runs his at 2 ohms. It seems to have a little more sound (could just be my imagination) than the JL.

I'm surprised you had to cut out more room for the JL. I didn't have to do any of that on mine. The JL fit just fine, I put in 4 screws and it's been great ever since.
