Like the title says.

I just bought a '97 limited knowing it had transmission problems.
It has a severe leak at the back of the pan on the driver's side (right hand drive) spilling onto the rhs cat.

Forward gears seem to work ok, enough to get it onto the ramps anyway; but it has no reverse at all, not even a little bump when it's selected.

So, a new pan gasket obviously, I'll get a rebuilt valve body with the upgrades and the bonded separator plate but what is it likely to be with the reverse?

I bought this car knowing I had a working trans still fitted to the XLT that i could swap in but if I can fix it just by taking the pan off I'll be thrilled.

In case anyone's interested in why it was leaking fluid and had no reverse.
Anyone ever seen the like?

Yes I have seen holes is the cases before, obviously something with reverse has broken and wants out!

I'm no stranger to claustrophobic conrods but I've never seen a transmission part go on a tour.
Then I wouldn't have seen anywhere near as many transmissions as you have.

The trans I put in was working fine in the car I got it from but now that it's fitted reverse doesn't work.
The transfer case won't let go of 4wd either.

When I've got time I'll do a post mortem, I'm curious to know what happened.
I have to replace the head gasket on the Mondeo (Contour) now and I haven't finished dicking with the trans in the Exp yet.

I wanted to take my time and look at all the clutches and bands and do a valve body upgrade on this trans then switch it with the one currently fitted but that ballistic part knocked a hole in that idea.

Geddit? Knocked a hole...
