Well guys this is urgent. My 97 Mountaineer is shorting out I think. First of all I will turn the key over and there will be nothing then a second later the power comes back on and then it will cut out then back out. It has a new battery on it and the battery is connected tight. When turning it off tonight the power kept coming in and out. My CD player face flips but kept going little at a time and the power kept coming in and out. Also the locks kept playing games. I had a problem like this before about 3 weeks ago and I got it working by checking connecters. I did the same tonight but did not work. The horn does not work now either. Before when I checked connecters I got it working again and the horn up. Now everything out. I have drive my parents Expedition. Not bad deal but need my Mountaineer back. Can anyone tell me where to check or what. I need Help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could check resistance bewteen batt - and chassis with a test light. Looking for an open circut in the ground.

Could be a bad ignition switch.

Just some guesses. Knowing exactly what doesn't work (ie radio, interior lights, starter, etc would help)

I would say the ignition switch too. If not that, you have to start checking wires. This is never fun, but you have to start at the power block, and check power both too, and from the power block. Determine where you are getting power, and try and figure which wire is bad. You can do this by checking wires to the ignition switch if the switch itself isn't faulty. Try and get some wiring diagrams, the best two places to check are Mitchell on Demand, or All Data. If you turn your key, and get nothing at all, with no horn or radio it should be your ignition switch. The other shorts could point to maybe a bad ECM unit. Good luck finding your problem.

Thanks guys for all your help.... I played with the wires last week and its been doing alright so far. A question can Ford click it up to there computers and find out where the problems coming from?

Not really in this situation. It might help but I think this problem would have to be fixed the old fashion way.... By swapping parts :)

Alright thanks. Sounds not to be that fun.

Just kidding about the parts swapping.

Knowing exactly what doesn't work would help in diag. the concern. That way you can focus in on the circuts that are likely to be at fault. Good luck and :burnout:
