I've got a '97 Mountaineer that I am trying to get running for my daughter. I replaced the blown engine in it with a salvaged one. I can get it to start ONLY my jumping the solenoid. I have power on the start circuit coming out of the column, but not at the red wire on the solenoid. Where would it be best to start checking things? The transmission range sensor? Thank you in advance for your help.

When I try to start it with the key I get 5 beeps from the passenger floor area, but no starting. I've replaced the Transmission Range Sensor, starter solonoid. Still get nothing. I've had it checked with an OBD2 scanner and it shows no codes. What else could it be? I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure it out and getting really close to putting a 4 sale sign in it and buying something else for my daughter.

1996 starting wiring

I don't have a 1997 wiring diagram but the 1996 one I have should be similar.

Power Distribution, Box Fuse 1, YEL wire > Ignition Switch, RD/LT BLU wire > Interior Fuse Panel, Fuse 24, RD/LT BLU wire > Relay Module, Anti-Theft Relay, WHT/PNK or PNK wire > Transmission Range Sensor, RD/LT BLU wire > Starter Relay, BLK wire > Starter Motor Solenoid

Did you check Fuse 24 in the Interior Fuse Panel?

If in Start there is battery voltage on the RD/LT BLU wire side of the Anti-Theft Relay but not on the WHT/PNK wire side then either the relay is bad or not enabled. It is enabled by the LT GRN/PPL wire coming from the RAP Module. I suspect the Anti-Theft Relay is not energizing.

I really really appreciate your help on this matter!! I haven't checked yet, but if there isn't voltage (12 volts I assume) is there any way I can bypass the anti-theft module or would I have to replace it?

I used the wiring harness from the new engine. They 'said' it was from a 97.

confirm engine year

The last 8 digits of the VIN are stamped on the driver side rear of the block just below the head. For a 1997 the first digit should be a "V". You may be able to see it using a light and a mirror. See the following post: VIN location

Does the replacement engine have the variable intake system? If not, then it is a 1999 or later if it has the original upper intake manifold.

So there is a chance that if I got the correct wiring harness it would resolve the pain in my neck? There is an extra pigtail in the harness that is the same plug and wire colors that are on the alternator.

I was just informed by my son. He said the motor is a 98.

Update: I replaced the wiring harness with a 97 and the ECU and the engine runs great! Then I couldn't get it to go into gear. I took it to a 'reputable' transmission shop to have the transmission rebuilt, (the pump in mine was shot). They put a rebuilt one in and it still wont go into gear. What else could it be? Would a E4OD or C4 transmission work in this vehicle and the speedometer still work?
