1997 Mercury Mountaineer starting mystery

Post number 4 has been selected as best answered.

Ok, been working on this two weeks.
Like Inigo Montoya, I decided to go back to the beginning. I skipped the drinking binge part, although that's an option for later.
First thing I had done was replace the starter solenoid/relay. I checked it.
A friend had done the work that while I was checking fuses. He put the new starter solenoid/relay in backwards, running the starter wire to the "i" post not the "s" post. Easy mistake to make, as the ring connector on the starter wire fit the i post and not the s, and that i post is closer to the where the starter wire emerges from the wiring harness. My fault, I should have checked.
I caught it when I testing the solenoid and it was not cranking when I was jumping 12v from the battery directly to that post. I pulled it, and saw the mistake. I got it wired correctly, and the solenoid now works with that 12v jump to the proper s post.
Vehicle still won't start, of course.
The wrong way solenoid was the 2nd issue. The 1st issue remains, and I essentially have to go back through a lot of my work over the last two weeks as the 2nd issue would have prevented any other solution from working.
But when I eventually get that voltage to that starter wire, at least that solenoid will work.
I am starting all the way back to Vizizini the gremlin thread checks and rolling forward from there.

Since we're going back to step 1

You might catch something if you follow that

So basically the little red with blue wire is the ignition switch to starter feed.
With your multimeter you simply need to see if battery power (12v+) makes it to that little red/ blue wire when the key is turned to “start”

My guess,
From what you have said, is that no power is making it to that small post

If it starts easily when you jumper the two large posts then it’s not a wiring issue with the pcm or engine etc

Here is the start system diagram for a 96 explorer

Check fuses 24 and 34 in the interior fuse panel

The anti theft relay is also suspect (if your truck has one)

The relay would be located in the auxiliary relay box which is mounted above gas pedal

I just got it, thanks to your wiring diagram 410Fortune. The wire was lose behind the interior fuse 24.
Thank you, and thanks to Turdle for all the help.
I know a lot more about this vehicle and about veh electronics trouble shooting now, so the time was not wasted.
This is a great forum, filled with helpful people.

Hooray! You got it

Wonder how that wire got loose? 98 was a long time ago I guess

Who sold you a 4 post starter solenoid??
That’s for like 1970 fords … the “I” terminal sends voltage to the coil during startup for old carbureted engines … silly!

So glad it’s sorted
