97 Ranger code p1744 and p0715

Ive searched the forum and read what I could find about both codes. I was wondering if they are related to each other some how. The trans is shifting real hard and it also seems the converter may not be locking up. I was planning on doing a vavle body RB and the EPC and TCC sensors. I hate to throw parts at it but I dont wont to do an unessasary rebuild of the tranny either. Thanks.

Strong relational possibility. P0715 indicates a problem with the Turbine Shaft Speed sensor (it is located on the center support). The computer uses this input for certain engagement strategies, including Torque convertor lockup as best I know. P1744 is essentially telling you the Torque convertor is never locking up.

My best "guess" is that your TSS has failed or is in the process and the PCM is unable to compensate. IF, IF I am right... it is teardown time as the TSS cannot be replaced without tearing into the tranny. If you tear into an older tranny, you may as well rebuild it - IMHO.

I hate to see anyone tear into a tranny if other possibilities might fix it... I maybe wrong here, but if it were mine, I think I'd rebuild it. Sorry.

Where would one obtain this sensor to replace at rebuild? I cant seem to find one online any where.

If you do a rebuild, you might as well replace it for $15.54. The amount of time, and labor required to tear into it is much more than this. Here's a picture from that link:
