Hey everybody, fist time posting after stumbling upon this forum after trying to find a fix to a few problems I've been having with my 97 XLT Explorer with the 4.0L V6 SOHC engine in it. The main problem I'm having right now is with the tranny/engine. I've searched around the forums looking through various threads but none have quite the same problem as I have. Anyway, on to the problem...

Normally (for the past 3 or so years) after reversing out of my driveway, I shift into Drive and let 1st gear engage and coast down a large hill to get out of my neighborhood. Now, when I shift into Drive, it take a MUCH longer time to engage first gear, a good 5 or so seconds now. I coast down the hill like normal and stop at the bottom of the hill to turn onto the main road. Here is where the second problem pops up. Once I come to a stop *sometimes* when I hit the accelerator it revs extremely high (4-5k rpms) and acts like there's loose sand or dirt beneath the tires and feels like the wheels are slipping. I thought maybe it WAS just sand or something, but its started happening at stop signs around town and at red lights where there isn't anything to make my tires slip. Also, while its reving very high, I'm only going 5-20 mph before first gear feels like it catches and then takes off like normal but sometimes (once again) it feels like it misses 2nd gear and either goes straight to 3rd gear or engages 1st again and then tries to shift into 2nd again. This has been happening off and on for the past couple of days and I haven't had time to really check the car out since I've been busy with work and daily things. I recently unplugged the battery to do some electrical work inside the car and so my air-bag light is currently lit up, but no CEL. I'm pretty sure the air-bag light just means I need to re-enter the code to get that to go away.

Anyway, that's one (of many) problem that's going on with my Explorer at the moment and would greatly appreciate any feedback you guys can offer.

Anybody got any suggestions? Really in a bind here because I don't have the money to take it in to get serviced unless it REALLY needs to be.

Read the 5r55e transmission rebuild diary. A sticky in the trans forum. Its long but should contain the answers you need.
