97Ranger with AC problem

I have a ranger 97 with AC problem.Whenever the truck is idling, the compressor cycles on and off every 5 to 10 seconds.When driving it works fine. Is there anyone that can identify the problem and advise steps that can be taken to eliminate it.

Welcome to the site, first off I'd recommend getting a set of manifold gauges and placing them on the system to get a psi reading. From there you'll be able to tell if you have a low charge issue or a overcharge issue or something else.

First, is it cooling? If so you do not have a problem
Second, the rate at which the compressor cycles on and off is determined by a number of factors, ambient temperature and air flow over the condensor being primary. Generally speaking, the cause of rapid cycling of the compressor is caused by a low refrigerant charge. If this is a problem that has developed over a long period of time, consider having it serviced at an air conditioning place.
Alternately, you can evacuate it yourself and add a new charge. If you care to gamble that you are down 12 oz, you can add a can from an automobile place.

Low charged compressor

I had the same problem and it was annoying to hear my compressor click on and off every five to ten seconds. I was getting cold air so I didn't bother with it until this summer when it started taking longer to get cool. So I went to Walmart and bought one of those recharge kits with a pressure gage. I put on one can of R134 and I couldn't believe it. The compressor stopped clicking on and off and wow I had to turn my AC down because it was blasting cold. I highly recommed spending the $30+ dollars. It is very simple to do!!

Yes clicking of a A/C compressor is the first sign of low refrigerant, as stated above get some gauges and check the hi and low side pressures.
