The rubber plug on the bottom of the tranny is that a drain plug? Does it drain the pan? or just the torque convertor? I have always assumed its a plug just wanna get a clear answer on its function. If so how is it removed?

It can be removed by carefully prying it out with a screw driver. Once removed, you can see the torque converter. The torque converter has a small drain plug in it that can be removed to drain the torque converter. The drain plug in the torque converter has to be aligned perfectly with the hole where you removed the rubber plug. You will likely have to bump your motor many times to get it aligned.

My Ford Shop Manual states, for the converter drain plug, (If so equipped". So, some may have it, some may not. Mine ('96 XLT) 4.0L OHV did not. imp

So if the hole and the drain plug is not aligned, you don't see the drain plug? Looks like a 'catch and hide' game. I will take a look at my 98 5v next weekend.

Right, you will likely just see the torque converter but there is a drain plug on the torque converter you can access when aligned with the hole in the housing, at least there is on all three of the 5.0 4r70w vehicles I have (1999, 2000, 2000).

It is more certain, rather than "bumping" the starter, turning the engine until the converter plug aligns below the bell housing hole, to turn it by hand using a ratchet, proper length extension, and socket wrench up front on the crankshaft damper bolt in the center. imp
