How do you get at the O2 Sensor passenger side just below the manifold? Do you have to remove the 2 exhaust manifold bolts to drop it down enough to get the Oxygen Sensor Socket on it?? I have a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L SOHC.

I went through the wheel well on my '97 SOHC. Changed all four in about 30 minutes.

What did you use for this specific sensor? a socket or open end wrench? When I put the recommended rented socket on it, there is no room for a rachet at the top, it is too close to the floor pan

Here is the best way to get at the o2 senors:

Get four friends and two 4x4s. Have them lift the body as you QUICKY change out the sensors. Do it fast cause your friends will get tired quick.

Okay, just kidding, I used an open-ended wrench to do mine. I think they're 18mm. Some of them are a peach to get to, I know!

EDIT: to the response below. I'd trust Robert's word over mine any day of the week.

I can't remember for sure which I used on which sensor since I did have to use my socket on some and an open-end wrench on the others. I know I had to use my open end wrench on the passenger side downstream O2 sensor. I think I also used my wrench on the passenger side upstream O2 sensor as well. I know none of them were difficult though. If there isn't enough room for the ratched on the socket, try a wrench. I beleive the wrench I used was 22mm.

Edit: In response to the thread above, I know it wasn't 18mm since I don't have an 18mm. It might have been 19mm though since I have a 19mm and a 22mm.

Wrench size access

I know this is an old thread but I'm adding this info for anyone reading that needs to know. On my '98 Explorer 4.0 L V6 SOHC (VIN "E"), I used a 7/8" open-end wrench and it fit very nicely. This is close to, but smaller than 22 mm, so I would suggest using 7/8" for a tighter fit, 22 mm if you don't have 7/8".

I also went through the wheel well after removing the gravel skirt to remove the passenger side upstream sensor. To make it even easier, remove the skirt and the inner wheel well housing.
