Hey, ive got a 98 explorer xlt with the 5.0 so it's got a 4r70w i believe, it's got a pretty hard shift but just from 1 to 2 so I'm pretty sure it's just the accumulator spring. On the 4r70ws it seems to be a pretty common problem. Anyone done this job already have any tips?

Yep u too will probably find a broken spring in the lower part of the accumulator
Sometimes the upper spring is also broken
Get yourself a new filter, 5-6 quarts of Mercon v and a new set of springs. Good snap ring/ o ring pliers
A floor jack with something small like a piece of broom handle to press the accumulator back together once you replace the bad spring so you can re insert the snap ring

The spring is very stiff so I’ve found using a floor jack centered right under it with a rod to push makes life easier

Nice truck!

Easy job. More annoying if you have to deal with the 2-3 accumulator
