I recently came back from Iraq and my wife had bought a 98 explorer with the 5.0L in it has 161k on the motor but it in exellent condition I am think of modifing it a bit here we go turbo or supercharged trying to stay concious of Fuel as well I get about 17 on the highway on 31"s and I am just starting to get in to the hobby I am not a brillant mechanic but I do know my way around the engine it has a Cold air intaje already and the preicvous owner took out the front driveshaft , Which I am going to have to fix but this motor model year seems real hard to find parts other than stock any reasons

welcome!

i'm not positive, but i believe the 5.0L shares a lot of parts with other 5.0L from other ford makes. like the mustangs. keep looking around the site and you'll find plenty of stuff to throw onto it. as for fuel, do a search for "my quest for 30", it's by Aldive, he has a V6 though but he has a bunch of tips for conserving fuel. and if you turbo/super charge it i'd imagine the fuel wouldn't go up to much, if at all.

good luck in your endeavors though and welcome!

Welcome

Congrats on the purchase lets see some pics. As far as forced induction I would check around to what fits your needs. Looks like a supercharger is the cheapest because it would be bolt on with minor fab work but all the turbo's I've seen on this site have been the remote mount or aftercat if you want to call them with nocthing or drilling holes and reinforcing the frame rails. Most all of the pony stuff will work on the X ( intakes , heads , roller rockers, cams , maf's) As far as headers go you score some of the leftover FMS off of E-bay or swap meets or you can spend your next income tax check on a set of TM's. There are no aftermaket TB's for the X yet that I know of some of the guys here have been able to modify one for a Mustang with some sucess. But before you do any of this do a compression check on each cylinder of the motor you might need to freshen it up before you put to much power or boost to it.
