I have a 98 exsplorer xlt 4.0 sohc, 5r55e trans
The trans has been rebuilt,and the rear diff was also rebuilt.
the problem is that it stays in 4whi even when the dash switch is on auto,
4 hi to 4lo works fine.
I unpluged the t case harness and it went into 2wd but when I reconnected the harness it was back in 4wd.Idont think theproblem is within the t case.
any ideas what sensors might cause this problem?
also would it hurt anything to drive it with the t case unplugged?
anyhelp would be greatly apprecited!:exp::exp::exp:

Indeed, you're right on track. It's an electrical issue. Driving with the case unplugged will simply relegate you to 2wd and a dash full of blinkin' lights, but it won't hurt a thing.

As for the root cause of the problem, without a thorough scan from a shop with an NGS tester (or equivalent) that can read the GEM PIDs (inputs and outputs) it's nearly impossible to know for sure what the problem is. Now, that being said, it's fairly common for the rear axle speed sensor to fail, and replacing the $15 part seems to fix the problem more often than not. If it doesn't, you're only out another $15 and 20 minutes of your time, so it's not an unreasonable place to start. Sometimes it'll also cause issues with the ABS kicking in at odd times, but not always.

But again, without a scan by a knowledgable tech, it's a guessing game at best.

Good luck!
