98 Explorer w/V6; O/D off flashes; DTC: P1740

I just bought an X with 112k; first thing I noticed was the O/D Off flashing; Was told it is a usual problem for this X; Adviced to replace the defective TCC solenoid. This weekend the X engine would cut off when R or D engaged.
Has the tranny died? Will I have to spend over $1k to fix this?
I love Fords: I have owned a 97, 98, 00 Expeditions-98 F150 and now a 05 F150 SC. First X and it looks like it will be expensive to keep. Help!

Adviced to replace Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid or Valve Body Gaskets or Electronic Pressure Control solenoid. Anybody have an idea why the X engine cuts off when placed in R or D?
