Greetings everyone. I've been lurking for a long time and enjoy the wealth of information here.
I have a 1998 2WD SOHC 4.0 auto that we bought new. It's been a great vehicle and has only required basic maintenance for 142k+ miles.
Yesterday I got on the highway at normal speed, accelerated moderately and the A/C stopped blowing cold. A glance at the dash showed the temp gauge in the red! Whoa!
I pulled over thinking the belt had snapped. With the engine idling everything looked and sounded fine. Turned the A/C on and off, the compressor cycled and starting blowing cold again. Thinking it was a fluke I continued on my way.
Back on the highway, now at cruising speed, the A/C shuts off again and the temp jumped up, but not into the red. I found the A/C would work after shutting it off for a while then turning it back on. Must be the compressor overheating.
Back in town, headed home, the A/C was still temperamental and the temperature was up. Other things started happening: acceleration was really weak at any time. The transmission would go from 2-3, then back to 2, then up to 3 a couple of times then shift normally.
I ran diagnostics when I got home and nothing jumped out as really abnormal. They appear to be my fault for not paying attention during the tests.
P1000 KOEO OBD2 DRIVE CYCLE NOT COMPLETE
P1464 KOEO A/C DEMAND OUT OF RANGE
P1000 EDTC OBD2 DRIVE CYCLE NOT COMPLETE
B1352 EDTC IGNITION KEY-IN CIRCUIT FAILURE
P1000 KOER OBD2 DRIVE CYCLE NOT COMPLETE
P1116 KOER ECT SENSOR OUT OF SELF TEST RANGE
P1464 KOER A/C DEMAND OUT OF RANGE
P1780 KOER E4OD TRANSMISSION CONTROL SW FAIL
I reset the system, drove around the neighborhood, experienced the same problems and pulled the same codes.
Of course my emission control manual is on a CD that is no longer readable...
Does anyone have any clues what could be going on? My gut tells me something electronic is dying.
TIA!
