I'm in the midst of getting a '98 XLT with 60K miles. You guys/gals with a similar vehicle - What is the most common problem with the car? What is your fixed cost on maintaining the car?

P.S. Wondering if I should pay $1450 for a 2 yr/30K xtended warranty?

Thanks for your help folks!!

If it is a SOHC get the 00M12 done to it immediately by the dealer for free.

I also had a leak in my pinion seal on the rear axel.

Other than that have a good mechanic check it out.

Good Luck, The warrentee might be worth it I'm not sure.

I have a 98 XLT and have had no problems with it. I have only done maintenance stuff. I bought it with 80,000 miles and it is still going strong at 96,000.

Thanks folks. I got the car without the warranty. I'll be online more with questions. Hopefully it was a good decision.

Two years ago I bought my '98 5.0 AWD XLT with 49,000 miles and a 4 year warranty that has paid itself off already. I had the O/D light blinking problem that was some sensor gone bad, I had the no display in the radio problem that after reading this board seems as an easy do it yourself fix, and I had all the ball joints and upper control arms replaced as well as the rear defog, and cruise on/off switches replaced. At least the switches were replaced because the bulbs went out. By changing the whole switch it was covered by my warranty.

98 XLT SOHC coming up on 54K miles. I've had the 00M12 done, the hood latch recall, changed teh oil and recommended maintenance and that's it. It's been excellent.

guess mine's kinda been a lemon, it's a 98 OHV Sport 4wd

the day I got mine I had the 4wd and 4lo lights flashing at me and not working, that was around $300 for a new relay I think (luckily the place I got it from footed the bill)

I've had to replace 2 oxygen sensors so far, that's regular maintenance but still $100, have one to go

I've had the O/D OFF light flash, that was around $800 for a new valve body, the gasket went bad and metal filiings blocked off stuff inside

The A/C has never really worked well, I've had it refilled twice and they swear there's no leak, something I"ll hafta fix this summer

Now my 4 LO won't engage, if I put it in 4 LO it'll stay in 4 hi and display 4 lo, but the comp won't tell it to disengage till I disconnect the battery, I'm pretty sure it's my shift motor on my transfer case, if I take it somewhere it'll be around $300. Since u don't need the shift motor to go into 4 HI I'm going to leave it untill I get some xtra time and money(basically never).

All this in under a year, and from 45,000-62,000 miles. When it works I love it, better gas mileage than my previous F-150, lotsa neat features inside, and a very good vehicle to have in the winter. If I had it to do over again though I woulda accepted the worse gas mileage and got a full size extended cab, or woulda gone w/ a V8 AWD since I currently don't have low range anyway, and don't need it.

O, and the rear wiper has never worked worth a darn, I bent it so it'd hit the glass, but that lasted about a week and now it's worse than it was b4.
