My 98 XLT has an interesting transmission issue occasionally. I get serious whirring/grinding noise in certain situations. The tranny "feels" fine otherwise. It shifts perfectly and there is never an interruption of power to the wheels.
Here is the situation that produces the noise:
1. Already warmed up (usually driving for at least 15 - 20 minutes)
2. Cruising at some speed above 40 mph
3. Take my foot off the accelarator to coast
4. Bingo, tranny produces awful noise
5. I tap the gas, and noise goes away.
Anybody have same issue? Know what the problem is?
Here is my humble, non-expert idea of what may be happening. It appears (and sounds) as if when I remove my foot from gas in order to coast, the tranny then tries to shift (I assume to highest gear?). It is during this shift that something either gets stuck, or does not disengage fully, or continues to spin when it shouldn't. When i tap the gas, the "shift" completes and all is well.
Could this be a tranny fluid issue? The tranny was flushed and refilled (at Ford dealer) about 10K miles ago, which is about the time that the noise appeared. I realize that from a troubleshooting standpoint, that should be a no-brainer as to the source of the problem. The problem is that the Ford guy says no way, not his fault, and i have no way to refute his claim, since i just don't know enough.
Thanks
