I was showing my son my 1999 Explorer Sport deal and it did well. Ok here's what happened a hard rain came through, of course the hood was down. Then a hour are so later I get in it and it will turn over like crazy but will not start. It has been 16 hours and it will still not start. It has only 72,000 miles.

Is the Check engine light stay on?

If so, you'll need to get a code scanner, and post the codes here.

Does it come on when you turn the key to the 'run' position?

If no, it's burt out, replace the bulb, and see above.

Do you hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds (the first time you try to start it for a couple of hours)?

Check the fuses (with a meter, looking at them isn't always accurate).

Post any results, and hopefully someone will be able to help you.

Well I got my son to check it yesterday while I was out buying a new washing machine. Everything tears up at once. He said that the fuel pump didn't run any when 1st switched on. Talked to a guy at work today and was told to hit the gas tank with a rubber hammer that sometimes the fuel pump sticks. It worked it fired right up but shut back off. After hitting it a few more times it is doing fine now. He said it probabley will stick again ,that I can count on having to replace it. Anyone got an idea how much longer it may go.

Did you ever get an anser to how long it should last? This just happened today to me. A guy banged on the fuel tank when I tried to start it and it worked fine. It is a 96 XLT and I am looking to get something else. Don't want to drop the money on this if I do not have to.
