Sorry, I don't have the time now to go through 50 pages looking for the answer.

99 EB 4x4 6 clyl 4.0

It is my daily driver and I don't race or off road with it.

Do I stay with the OEM parts or aftermarket, if so what? I don't know for sure if I need rotors yet, if that changes your recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

I do LOTS of mountain driving, and I use the Wearever Gold pads...no dust on the rims whatsoever.

Look at the rotors. If they have fairly deep scratches (circles) then is better to replace them together with the new pads. Rotor quality is important, cheap ones will give you problems soon.
Personally I did buy "Raybestos PG Plus Professional Grade Disc Brake Rotor" from Amazon.
The pads I did try:
1. Performance Friction Carbon Metallic Brake Pads. Mix of carbon and metal. The best (till now). Grip, dust, noise - all good.
2. Wearever Ceramic Brake pads. Decent stopping in general, but in the first second of the (light) braking squeak and don't fell like grip that well. Almost like they need to heat up. VERY dusty.
3. Wagner ThermoQuiet Brake Pads Metallic (MX series). Consistent braking but slightly less grip than "warm" ceramics. No squeak, minimal dust, a little "softer"(compressible) than ceramics. I didn't have occasion to try their QC series (ceramics).
4. Wearever Gold Brake Pads - semimetalic, acceptable performance, but IMO below the ThermoQuiet. Occasionally slight squeak (really cold weather, mornings), more dusty (but not like ceramics), grip so-and-so (compressible, some fade after a lot of braking).
4. Wearever Silver - It is a long time (7-8 years?) since I did try to use them. I remember they where "ok" at the beginning, but they didn't last one year with my driving. Maybe cheap rotors that I did pair them back then had to do something with. They started pulsating badly...

Thanks no intentions of going cheap, my family rides with me.

i have Hawk pads and rotors on my Off Road rig/once daily driver,,
and have all good things to say about them, very impressive and long life ,

Stay away from rotors made in China. Their quality is very hit and miss.

Most are now made in China, even name brand. Take a look at a Brembo box. I do like my Power Slot cryo's with Hawk pads for a street vehicle.

I have the cryo treated rotors on my Mustang and really like them. The pricing isn't too bad either. Here's a link: http://www.frozenrotors.com/

I used ceramic pads with mid grade rotors. Its been about 40,000km, and the front pads and rotors still look new. Braking is strong also. Very odd, actually.

I think a lot of the groves wearing in the rotors under normal conditions come from grit getting caught between the pads and rotors and embedding itself into the pads. Driving on sandy soil will wreak havoc with rotor wear. Especially when you go through muddy water.

Demystifying? Quite the opposite for me.

So, they are saying that the ceramic pads we purchase aftermarket for a premium price are not really ceramic pads, and are actually low quality as far as noise, and wear, and friction? They sure make them sound like crappy pads.

I was about to swap my rangers bigger rotors and pads, since they are brand new and I need to junk it, onto my explorer. I got mine at napa, napa brand too. Stopping power....AHHH.... Crappy. I like to slowly slow down and, sometimes I have to press harder then I use to before I replaced rotors and pads.
I think my rotors on ranger are bigger. I am going to attempt to swap rotors and pads. Well see how it goes. I'm also contemplating going with a good aftermarket brand.
