I've got a '99 2wd Ford Explorer with a 5r55e transmission which has engages reverse just fine, but drops out 3-5 seconds after engaging and applying torque (throttle). After dropping out, it will not re-engage until you shut off/restart the vehicle. No codes are coming up, no O/D light flashing, forward gears all work fine (though I did have a momentary flare in 2-3 upshift one time, but haven't driven it much after the reverse issue crept up). I do get forward engine braking in manual low.
Of course, the local shop wants $1800 to "replace the reverse band." I don't think it's the reverse band, since it does engage initially, it just drops out.
My thoughts, before I tear into it... worn/split leaking reverse servo? worn friction material on the low/reverse band (both of these, however, make me wonder about why manual low works so well, if either of these were an issue, since my understanding is that the band is engaged in either manual low or reverse). Other than that, valve body leak? I'm perplexed by the fact that it won't re-engage until restarting (unless it simply is not losing the servo back pressure to re-engage until the transmission is no longer spinning).
