I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with a 4.0 SOHC and 178,000 miles. I had the transmission rebuilt at 120,000 miles. I just recently noticed that there is a whirl or whine noise coming from under the vehicle when I have it in gear and the noise appears to get louder while accelerating. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Note: The noise does not exist while in Park or Neutral - only while in gear. At high speeds the noise isn't as noticable.

If yours is a 4x4 it could be the transfer case.

Same thing happened to mine when I let off the gas when cruising, a whirring or whining noise. When my foot was on the gas the noise was not present.

My transmission shop was able to source a used replacement for me and got the job done for $800. I believe a new one from Ford was like $2200.00

I have a '98 Sport that had about 165,000mi at the time this happened.

My Explorer is a 4x4. The noise seems to start as soon as it's placed in gear and intensifies when I begin to accellerate, even at low speeds while driving through my development.

Mine at 150k did that, but it was just the alternator, HORRIBLY loud whine when I first bought it, then after about 70mi drive home, it was gone. This was just a few days ago, haha, still gotta replace it

I had originally hoped the noise was coming from the engine compartment, but it seems to be located more underneath the vehicle.

Ah that cant ever be good, heres for hoping its just somethin minor :P
