so i just bought a 99 ford explorer v6 4.0 in feb, its 4wd. Before i bought it the lady showed me all the recites and papers of what was done before and she showed me all 4 timing chains was done before when the car was at 120k miles. now its at 182K miles most of it is high way miles from Seattle.
now im starting to hear some kind of ticking noises/vibrations from passenger side bottom of the engine..
The noise doesnt come when i rev it up or when im driving. The noises stay there only if im at traffic light or just idling at park.
I tryed doing the search on things and stuff for timing chains and it usually says it only does it on cold starts or hot engine or between higher rpms.
i have no noises there it just during idle about 600-800 rpms if i rev my engine up to 1000rpm its gone..
any suggestions ideas?

Balance shaft chain tensioner?

The 4WD SOHC V6 usually has a balance shaft. The balance shaft chain tensioner is located at the lower front of the engine on the passenger side.

It is visible after removing the front cover but the block cradle (upper oil pan) must be removed in order to access the tensioner vertical mounting bolts.

I suggest removing the serpentine belt and run the engine for a minute or two. The noise could be coming from the belt tensioner.
