Last year I used a sub-par oil filter on my 07 Taurus (3.0L) and every time I started it is would give a clearly lower-end main bearing knock momentarily... I switched to OEM Motorcraft filter prob solved....

My Explorer has the exact same sound at start-up (as if the mains are starved for oil momentarily). I switched to Motorcraft Filter and no change... Anyone else experience this. What the resolve if any?

Also Oil Pressure is good when running 100K miles and no noise after start up

helooooooo (echo echo echo) anyone?

Some said that Fram filters will cause this issue too. Of course that's the one I put in in place of the generic one. hmmph

I haven't been using the explorer as the trans has no REVERSE, but yesterday I took advantage of the nice weather and changed the oil and filter, and other maint... (I plan to get a trans soon)

>Motorcraft Filter FL1A
>Pennzoil 5w30

After the initial start-up (yes I primed the new filter, and checked for double gasket) there was lower bearing noise as expected, but again this morning 15 hours later the same sound...

I did a pressure test and the oil pressure is fine -
>WOT 140+PSI
>IDLE 60-90PSI
>Doesn't knock/clatter at all once running
>Third Oil Filter
>Fresh Oil

Yet still getting bearing clatter at start-up:dunno:
Anyone else have/had this issue?

Thanks,
Mike

I think I might have a similar issue. I got my Explorer only last week so I haven't tracked down any of the funny noises yet. It's a 99 EB with 222K miles on it. Last owner did all the proper maintenance, so I have no clue what it is. I don't think you're alone!

N83: What oil filter is on it?

Here are the one's I tried to no avail:
>Generic Jiffy Lube (was on when I bought it)
>Fram Extra Guard
>Motorcraft FL1A
>Motorcraft FL1A (again to make sure)

Still clatters after it sits fro more that 10 hours :(

Bump! Anyone know about this issue and a resolution?

My first car, a ****ty ass '84 Ford LTB Broham 3.8L, sounded like this before it spun a bearing and blew up. But this truck runs like a top. No blow by, no leaks, quiet as it can be - its just at start up in any temp after a night of sitting it sounds like it is gonna spin a bearing....

That oil pressure is too high, better recheck with a different gauge. It it is truly that high (PSI) the bearings have likely been washed out and will need rod/main bearing replacement. I can't see it being that high. Worn rod bearings will also cause the noise you hear since they will allow oil in the crankshaft to seep out while the engine is shut down. Oil filters will drainback also but most engines you never notice because the crank holds enough oil to keep things quiet till pressure pops on.

- I appreciate your feed back Lemondrop
Well it is just a gauge from Harbor Freight :D... I will recheck again with another. If it was bearings wouldn't you hear it under load or during decel? This truck runs extra quiet, gets good mileage and has no tell tale signs of abuse. I am not denying that it could be mains worn out, just puzzling that all the other usual suspects aren't apparent.

Do you know if there is a TSB for a drainback valve issue on this motor/oil pump?

I don't think the pressure is right. The pump has a limiter (relief) valve that would divert the oil back in pan at some 80 PSI (not sure exactly).

Bingo, The cheapo HF Gauge flaked out after the 3rd time I used it. I will be getting a different gauge next weekend and try it again. I guess I'll probably be ordering an Oil Pump too...

bk99sport:
No it is the OHV motor. The Sohc is the one with all the timing chain noise..
