99 X Engine Question

Real easy question.....how can I tell which model V6 that a 99 XLS has? Also any comments pro/cons on adding a K&N drop in air filter.

If it's an auto it's most likely SOHC, manual then it's OHV. On the top of the motor, it will either say SOHC or EFI (OHV motor).

A KN is always a good idea.

i think the xls models all came with the 4.0 v6 ohv engine.. the xlt hadan option of 4.0 v6 sohc or v8... and the sports had ohv 4.0 v6 if man.. and sohc 4.0 v6 if auto

The easiest way is to look at your VIN if the 8th digit is an X it is a 160hp OHV if it is an E it is a 205hp SOHC

The Sport got the SOHC when it was ordered as an option or the Premium Sport package was ordered. Otherwise the Sport would come with the OHV regardless of whether it was an automatic or manual.
