My wife and I are about to get a new Explorer 4x4. This will be my 4th Explorer, but the 1st 4x4 Explorer. My other 3 Explorers were for flat country, and I've had 2 4.0L's and 1 5.0L. We are moving to a mountainous rural area in 6 months. We probably won't be doing much (if any) towing with it, and if we do it won't be a large trailer. My wife will be the primary driver.

My questions are:
Should I get the 4.6L V8, or stick with the 4.0L SOHC V6?

Do I have a choice about the Flexible Fuel Engine? Are all of the new engines for the Ex FFV? Does FFV hurt performance?

Thank you.

IMO go with the V8. From my experience there isn't much difference in gas mileage from the 4.0 and the 4.6L. I am actually getting better mileage with my V8 Mountaineer than I did with a 4.0L Ranger (the Ranger did have 4.10 rear, 31" tires, and a manual, while the Mounty is a 3.55 or 3.73 rear).

Re: FFV--it is only in the 4.0--not the 4.6. The only thing that it really does is help the CAFE scores (yes, I know you can use the 85 Ethanol in it if you can find it...)

i work at a ford store..you def should go with the 4.6 no questions asked!!! so much power and 1mpg difference than the 4.0....
