!994 Ranger SuperCab AOD won't shift into Overdrive

I have a 1994 Ranger SuperCab 4X2 with a 4.0 V6 and automatic transmission with overdrive. The tranny shifts real smooth and works great in all gears but just won't shif into the overdrive. Every now and then the check engine light will come on for a few seconds to a few minutes and then go out. The ABS light is also on.Anyone know what the problem might be? I was thinking the speed sensor in the rear pumpkin. I just replaced the radiator and refilled the tranny. Thanks

you have an A4ld, not an AOD unles someone has swapped in an older model V8 transmission

On the A4LD (as noted, your '94 Ranger should have an A4LD, not an AOD), the 3-4 shift is electronically controlled. In cases like yours where everything seems to work except the 3-4 shift, I would first suggest you check out the electronic controls. Not necessarily in the order I would do things, but some specifics to check are:

1) Pull codes from the computer (see stickies in EEC-IV forum) -- possibly something there that would point to the reason it won't upshift.
2) Get a wiring diagram and check the wiring to the shift solenoids. Do you have power at the transmission? Wiring intact between the transmission and the PCM?

You are right. It's a A4ld transmission. My ABS light is on and the transmission won't shift into overdrive. Every once in a while it will shift into the OD on the freeway but then it won't stay in OD. Does anyone think the ABS sensor on the pumpkin could be the problem?

It's possible if the PCM uses the ABS speed sensor as the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). On my '92, they VSS is different from the ABS sensors and is attached to the output of the transfer case. I'm not sure if Ford had combined the sensors by '94 or not (I want to say not).

No, my speed sensor is on the transfer case too. Checked that already and it' OK.

with the over ride system it could be a matter of something wrong with your computer on your truck do you have a code reader?
