I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about taking your AC compressor and turning it into a air compressor. I have seen it done on a Jeep when I was in Alaska but didn't know where he got the parts from.

What's the benefit of Air compressors?

-Drew

ITs an old offroad thing to take an AC compressor and use it to pump air. Great for inflating your tires on the trail and such, plus you dont need to figure out where to mount an external compressor. to the best of my knowledge the only correct way to do it is to use an old YORK AC compressor as they have a seperate oil resivour whereas most others rely on lubricants in the AC refrigrerant to keep them spinning happy. Heres some reading material:

inh is dead bang on. The old YORKS are great for this task. Bad news... they are big, bulky and hard to find space for (and increasingly hard to find). Belts/pulleys are also an issue.

Just ditch your stock compressor and fab up some mounts for a york :p (i may do this... my a/c works like crap anyways, and living in CA for years i just drove around with windows down (hard to do with a faulty GEM though...))

Thanks for the info. Thats what I was looking to do. I'll have to do some more measurements and what not to figure out where exactly I wanna put it. On a side note... I was looking at that link inh posted and I like that air tank bumper. I already built a front bumper and was about ready to do the rear so I'll have to build it to where its an air tank as well. I'll post some pictures up when I get it done!

be careful while welding up the bumper. it takes a lot of time and attention to detail to weld up the bumper so there are no air leaks

a friend of mine is using half the frame in his s10 as an air tank...

i just took out my stock ac compressor and put an alternator in its place-

i realize i'm not really on topic, but you won't hve any problems with the brackets etc. etc.

I was able to retain the stock length belt too
