Does the a/c compressor need to come out to replace the clutch on a 96' 5.0 Explorer?

Mechanic says system needs to be evac'd and compressor pulled to replace clutch.

I thought you could replace clutch without doing all this?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Assuming we are talking about the compressor clutch as opposed to the transmission clutch.

Generally speaking the compressor and clutch are repaired at the same time. It requires a special tool to hold the clutch when removing.

Don't even bother with just the clutch. Have the system evacuated, then put in your own used compressor from a junkyard that carries a 30-day guarantee. Last year I got a compressor from a yard in NH with a 30-day for $40, INCLUDING shipping. I found it via a request on www.junkyarddog.com . It's not difficult to replace it, and the hardest part is getting your ratchet to the belt tensioner to loosen it and pull the belt off.
