I have searched the forum related to my topic and found some posts but nothing that I can hang my hat on in terms of an accurate diagnosis of my problem.

2002 Mountaineer, 4.6 L, AWD, Auto Climate Controls

My blower started making noise just on the tail side of winter when I was running the heater. I didn't use it much for a month or so. Then started using for the A/C. Noise got louder.

Now blower does not work at all. Controls still show blower speed levels. I can feel a faint bit of warm/cool air when I have the settings on. But no blower action.

I read where it could be the blower or resistor. I'm getting mixed signals because some threads say the Mountaineer with Auto Climate does not have a resistor. Others say it does. As electrical parts go, you cannot return them except for an exchange and I don't want to invest in parts I don't need.

My intuition says it the blower motor bearings and the blower is the fix. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

The blower motor is easy to access, it is under the dash on the passenger side. You can disconnect the wire connector going to the motor and check with a bolt meter to see if power and ground are being supplied when the fan speed is set to max. it should be full battery voltage. if it is present and the blower fan still does not work on its highest speed than remove the blower motor and check to see if anything is stuck fan wheel. If you can spin the fan by hand with out issues than the blower motor is most lileky bad. FYI, Auto climate control vehicle have a fan speed controller that controlls the fan speed by Pulse Width Modulation. Manual climate controls use the resistor pack to control fan speed.

blower speed controller is bad

would it make this sound by chance??

That is the exact sound... at least it WAS the exact sound. Now I get no blowing whatsoever. I can still feel hot and cold filtering through the vents very slowly, however.

I was planning on trying to pull the blower speed controller today and take it to the auto parts store.

If you are further along than that, please let me know how it worked out for you.
