I have a leak at the high side service port on a 1995 explorer. I noticed that you can use a wrench to unscrew the valve for a replacement if needed. That's great because it saves me from having to replace the entire hose just for that valve. The problem is that I can't seem to find anybody that carries that part. I've already tried Napa, Advance Auto, and Pepboys. So far it looks as if I'd have to buy the complete hose assembly just for the fitting. The only other thing I know to do is go to a junkyard. I'd rather get a new part rather then a used one and not risk loosing another 3 cans of refrigerant. Would anybody here know where I could get this part? Thanks

Is there refrigerant in the system now, or not?

If it's empty you can use any Schrader valve tool to replace it. Otherwise, you need a special tool to change the valve core without purging the system:

They used to sell those at Advance Auto, but I checked and don't see them on the website anymore. :(

The core is pressed into the housing which is removable. I have to replace the housing itself. It is made of aluminium and it screws into the top of the stem coming off of the high side hose. Go take a look at your high side port on your Explorer and you should be able to see the same thing. I believe it is the same setup on yours. It has flat sides on it so that you can use a wrench to unscrew it.

scucci, will the valve that you listed fit a 95 explorer a/c system? I ask because when I went to NAPA to buy a replacement valve, they gave me a valve that, if it wasn't for the valve that I brought with me, I would have easily mistaken it for an exact replacement. The valve they were selling me was a conversion valve rather then a direct replacement. The thread pitch was slightly different and it was just a hair smaller then the original. I just don't want to purchase it to find that it is the same as the part that I almost bought from NAPA.

The port that I listed is not a conversion port. It is the replacement for the original port.
O'reilly sells Murray part number 59946. You can also contact ackits.com and ask them what part number you need. They are very nice people. They also have a forum with many pro's answering questions. The ports all leak up to 1/4 oz. per year. The cap and it's rubber seal stop that small leak. I have replaced some that get stuck open from dirt or broken springs.

Thanks, I used the part number that you gave me and plugged it into the part number search at the Advance autoparts site and it came up that they had some in stock. So, after all of the running around that I did, it turned out that they had the part from the start. They just didn't know how to look it up without the part number I guess. They didn't have a cap to go on it so, I had to drive back to NAPA and bought one for $0.75. Thanks again.

Glad that solved the problem.
