So yesterday I got a new a/c compressor put on my truck. The mechanic tells me that the vent door for the cold side will not open completely. This is why only a small amount of cold air is coming through the vents. It's too hot for this. :( I don't know the first thing about taking the dash apart, and am afraid I'm gonna break something. When I asked if he would do it he told me no. So I'm contemplating trying to fix it myself or taking it to someone else, but would rather not have to put anymore money into it if I don't have to. Can someone help me out?

Taking the dash out is no trivial matter. Its not really hard its just very time consuming, and much easier with the front seats removed. Unfortunally, the cables that work the airbox doors are on top of the airbox and are hard to get to. You can try to reach them from under the dash or from behind the glovebox. Feel around to see if a cable came off a control pulley, or if the pulleys are broken.

How do they know the vent door is stuck anyway? If the controls don't bind and you can hear stuff moving in the dash, then chances are the airbox and doors are fine

There is another door that opens to exterior air on MAX AC. If this door does not work, the A/C doesn't work very well (tepidly cool air). This door is driven by a vacuum line that I found abraded in my X. If you move the lever from MAX to Panel and back, you should hear and feel a tangible difference in airflow. If you suspect this, then check the hard black plastic lines under the hood, near the blower motor.
