My A/C is inoperable. I don't hear anything clicking or turning on under the hood when I hit the button. I am thus assuming that the compressor is bad. I would like to get this replaced before the Kansas heat returns!

I know you need a license to evacuate/recharge. How hard is it though to install a new compressor?

Thanks in advance.

You might want to make a post for this in the A/C forum, or ask a mod to move it there. Theres quite a few A/C techs on here who can get more specific about this stuff.

You might just have a bad connection at the switch or the electrical plug under the hood if the system isn't engaging. Check your fuses and relays as well. If the compressor really is bad, now would probably be the time to lay out the dough for new hoses and everything else that would go along with a conversion to R134a, if yours is a R-12 system. If yours is R134a, then you don't need a license to recharge it, since you can buy R134a most anywhere. You'll want to have a shop evacuate the system for you prior to opening the system or removing the compressor, though.

Most likely you have a leak & the refridgerant is already out of the system. AC won't engage if the system pressure is too low. Get the can stuff & dump it in as directed. Then check for leaks. Usually a rubber o-ring is the culprit at a quick disconnect.

Thanks Anime and Walter,

So if it does not turn on then it's prob not the compressor?

I will check for leaks then.
